Sun Devil Stadium - Tempe Arizona
The Problem
Hollow core slabs and concrete topping bearing on steel beams are the concourse
walkway structural system at Sun Devil Stadium, Tempe Arizona. Due to poor joint
detailing and years of wash down, the beam top flanges and hollow core bearing angles
were losing significant section due to corrosion. Jacking the hollow core slabs
and beam were required to repair the bearing and strengthen the beams.
The Solution
Restruction Corporation designed and implemented a unique jacking method insuring
fast track construction scheduling. Upper grandstand support beams with excess capacity
were used to lift the hollow core planks and concourse beams. The unique jacking
system eliminated two levels of conventional jacking and shoring towers. The steel
concourse beams were cleaned of corrosion and top plated for strengthening. Jacking
of the concourse beams, to provide active strengthening was completed with a cross
member attached to the hollow core jacking system. The hollow core bearing angle
was replaced in its entirety providing new bearing pad.
